Debe Maxwell, CRS “Keeping in touch is the best way to show your gratitude in our business. I believe that many buyers and sellers fall through the cracks after Closing because agents feel like the ‘job is done.’  Our client relationships, honestly, should NEVER end!”Right on target – and -re-blog!
“Thank You” – Two of the Most Important Words in the English Language
Remember the grandparent lessons, “Always say ‘please’ and ‘thank you?’ Gosh, as far back as I can remember, those are some of the first ‘lessons’ I ever learned. That, along with ‘Don’t ever be afraid to say, I’m sorry,’ ‘Don’t chew with your mouth opened,’ ‘Elbows off the table,’ ‘Don’t talk with food in your mouth’ and, of course,  ‘Don’t run with scissors!’

Seriously, saying ‘Thank you’ really does go a LONG way in our personal lives as well as in our businesses. Every single day of my life, I help my husband get ready in the morning. Without fail, every single day, he says, “Thank you, honey” when he’s up and situated in his chair. I often wonder if those two words are what has set my mood for the day for the past 21+ years – is that why I always feel positive?
I’m not doing anything for him that anyone else wouldn’t do but, those two words really do make a difference – in my entire day. They also make a difference to your clients; without our clients, we wouldn’t even have a business. So, why would you ever miss an opportunity to thank them?
Saying “Thank you” with Actions
They say that actions speak louder than words. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ever speak those two words but, showing gratitude is also actionable and when you show you are appreciative, people hear you loud & clear!
Keeping in touch is the best way to show your gratitude in our business. I believe that many buyers and sellers fall through the cracks after Closing because agents feel like the ‘job is done.’  Our client relationships, honestly, should NEVER end! Showing our gratitude results in long-standing relationships…as well as future business. I am ever-so thankful for my clients – and I let them know every chance I get.
I am also thankful for client referrals. I also believe that the best part of our business is the friendships that develop over the years of working with our clients. Many of my clients have become dear friends – for which I am incredibly thankful.

Our clients attend our client & volunteer events and they are LOYAL clients; our clients often proclaim to anyone who will listen that they are ‘raving fans!’  Why? Because they know my team and I care about them. Again, why? Because we SHOW them that we do…and OFTEN!
*This was an event that we held at our home to aide Charlotte Humane Society. We treated the client guests to food & beverages and they were honored and excited to help an organization in which we share an interest. My clients love giving back as much as I do!
We don’t wait for a set time interval to reach out to our former clients – we do it all the time!  We are a very social team and love the connection we have with our clients. Here are a few of the ways that I show my clients that my team and I are thankful for, not only their business but, them:Reach out immediately after the sale to offer any assistance, answer any questions
Reach out a couple of weeks after the sale to visit and deliver housewarming gift*
Do pop-by visits, sometimes to share our latest home-cooked concoction (jellies, breads, sweets)!
Frequently have coffee, drinks, lunches or dinners with our clients
We host multiple events each year -Happy Hours
Charity Events
Tailgating Parties
Holiday Parties
Housewarming Parties*Housewarming gifts are given instead of ‘Closing gifts’ – I tailor them to each specific client – there is no one-size-fits all or bulk gift ordering for my clients. They are all hand-picked, depending upon client needs, wants or passions.

What I love about my team is that we’ll be working with a client and during a meeting, someone will say, “They really need help with _____. Let’s host a housewarming party and make that happen.” I love that about my team – their caring, compassionate mindset is an extension of me; it’s all about the culture of which we set the example when we have others working with & for us.
This year we had two teacher clients (one was referred to me by the other) and we read a post on Facebook with an article about teacher expenses. The article shared how they make so little for all that they do and they still wind up putting a lot of their hard-earned money back into their classrooms.
Why not get them everything on their wish list?  So, we asked them to share what types of items they typically needed in the classroom throughout the year. We then bulk-purchased enough for both of them for their classrooms for the entire year and took them out to lunch to surprise them with the items, the week before school started. They were as excited as school children! Believe me, it meant more to me to be able to help them.

I also send out birthday, anniversary & house-a-versary cards.  For anniversary cards, I phone the spouse most likely to forget the date a few days ahead of time – “Hey, happy EARLY-10-year anniversary!”  I’ve had quite a few clients ask me to contact them every year because I had kept them from forgetting!
In a nutshell, showing our gratitude is an EASY thing to do – over and over and over again. You’re never too old to learn to say, ‘Thank you,’ never!

And, thank YOU, Jim Cheney, for hosting this challenge, amidst the chaos that you’ve been through in the past month. We truly appreciate your dedication to this community!
